ECSTATIC DANCE SALT LAKE CITY

Ecstatic Dance Salt Lake City started with Zack’s move to Salt Lake City from the Bay Area of California. He had discovered that gathering with intention to dance together in community had a healing affect that helped him overcome addictive tendencies as well as filling a spiritual vacuum in his life. He jokingly says that he had none of the skills needed to start a large community dance except the deep desire to dance and to belong somewhere.

Ecstatic Dance Salt Lake City & Conscious Community Collective (a 501c3 non-profit), is an organization focused on building community through the celebration of diverse beliefs and lifestyles. Hundreds of people from all ages and genders gather weekly to “dance their prayers” as they feel inspired in the moment inside of a Temple in Salt Lake City to the music crafted by live local community DJs on a large sound system. They dance sober, barefoot and without any talking on the dance floor. 

The Temple and Dance are surrounded by a 1 acre permaculture food forest, green house and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) that has been planted, grown and harvested by dancers and others in the community. This garden is one of the largest permaculture installations in Utah and is a 100% vegan grown farm. To attend one of the dances or to visit the Temple garden, feels Edenic and Utopian, we all have problems, but they seem to dissolve in these spaces and tend to kindle a nostalgia for a more beautiful world.

Conscious Community Collective is a nonprofit that was born from the community created by Ecstatic Dance and the permaculture food forest. The Collective has hosted classes and workshops on a vast array of subjects: movement modalities including, Yoga, Feldenkrais Method, Continuum, Dance Therapy, Breath Work, Shamanic Practices, Dia de los Muretos Ceremony, Shamanic Journeying and Contact Improvisation.
